Veteran's and Memorial day flags
On cemetery plots these flags are placed- it usually has VFW or American
legion on the plaque. l found one that is 2 rifles crossed with the number
''5'' in the middle- neither of the people buried was old or young enough
for any wars- what does this plaque symbolize? Thanks
the crossed rifles do mean infantry but the 5 does not
necessarily mean 5th infantry. It means 5th battalion because battalions
were formed back in the civil war and the number of the battalion was
placed under the insignia. This is why current day military insignias
have the battalion at the bottom of the insignia. And at the top of the
insignia would be placed the regiment.
crossed rifles represent infantry after the civil war period so
this person was in the 5th US infantry
